Sec 1 Dragon Boating Enrichment Activity

Mr Chng did a short briefing about the objectives of the enrichment and he set the tone before we left school for the Singapore Dragon Boat Association. The place is located along Stadium Road. It was bustling with kayakers and dragon boat enthusiasts.

We met our dragon boat instructor who conducted a safety briefing and taught us how to hold the paddle. He reminded us to paddle as a team before we headed down into the boats.

ATC Camp 2011

Adventure Training Camp @ Pulau Ubin

The objectives of the ATC is to develop the campers' ruggedness, self-reliance, resilience, team-work and leadership skills. At the end of this camp, cadets who completed the camp successfully will get a proficiency badge. (S3 get Survival Badge, S2 get ATC badge)

Off we go from Changi jetty to Pulau Ubin on a bum boat in groups of 12 people.

Our adventure begins...

We walked into the NPCC Campsite which is commonly called Camp Resilience.
It is located at No. 80, Kampong Noordin.

The S2 cadets stayed at the Bahru campsite and the S3 cadets stayed at the Noordin Campsite for their Survival Training Camp. The CIs introduced themselves and the rules of the camp were explained to us. We also had Ms Chen Lian Yu, a Honorary officer with us during the camp. Zi Sheng collected all valuables and put it in a black trash bag for safe keeping. We immediately started to pitch our tents.

After the tent pitching, we were grouped into our different camper groups. We made many new friends from the cadets from the other schools in our Area. (SMSS, BHSS, NGHS, HCI, SJI, ACS, RGSS) We spent the afternoon with Camp familiarisation.

After dinner, the CI's taught us camping songs and cheers to prepare for the camp fire night.

We were also given time in our groups to prepare for an item.

On Day 2, we experienced the Low Ropes Challenge which had activities that demanded our concentration, tenacity, persistence and teamwork. At the Adventure Fortress, we did rock-climbing where we got a chance to abseil and belay. We went into the Maze. There was also the kayaking activity and a land expedition around Pulau Ubin.

Day 2 ended with one of the best traditional camp fire. There was mass singing, dancing, lots of laughter and great fun. Items presented by the groups were entertaining. It was a fun, enjoyable and memorable night!

Day 3 was basically spent packing up, area cleaning and singing songs while reminiscing last night's camp fire.

We were presented with our badges before walking out to the jetty.

We were exhausted but very happy with our ATC experience. We did it! Yahooooo...

It was time well-spent at Camp Resilience. Everyone benefited from the experiences and adventures during the camp.

One Star Kayaking - Enrichment Module

(Enrichment Module)

As a team, we carried the kayaks and paddles from the storage area and lined them up on the ground before carrying them over into the Kallang River. Everyone helped out to carry the kayaks.

After a final safety briefing, we went into the river in groups to do our PFD buoyancy test.

The instructor showed us step by step how to do the capsize drill and how to remove the water from inside of the kayak. After that, we all took turns to practise our capsizing in the kayak.

The instructor taught us how to use the paddle. We learnt the basic forward and backward strokes. We then moved out into the river and practised these strokes.

We also learnt the draw, forward sweep and reverse sweep strokes when we were in the water.

We had a quick debrief session with the instructor before we changed out of our wet sandy attire.

Time to head back home and rest. It was tiring but a fantastic learning experience!

Looking forward to the kayaking expedition tomorrow where we will put to test all the different strokes and the capsize drill.

We arrived at the Kallang River early in the morning. Firstly, we were taught the names of the different parts of the kayak - the bow (front), stern (rear), deck, hull, cockpit, seat, grab handle & foot braces. The instructor also explained to us the difference between a life jacket and a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). We were taught how to wear and tighten the PFD correctly. Lastly, we watched a capsize drill video.

Day 1 Highlights - Night Walk

Safety briefing and preparation for night walk to Alexandra Canal.

Off we go...

As we walked along Margaret Drive, we passed a Church (The Fisherman of Christ Fellowship), Queenstown Library, New Optometry and Ocular Care Centre (NOOCC). We headed towards the Alexandra Canal Linear Park. Alexandra Canal Linear Park is unique as it is built on top of a covered canal. It starts from Queenstown MRT Station, passing by Strathmore Estate all the way to Tanglin Road.
Along the way, we passed Queenstown Primary School, Queenstown Secondary School, a mosque (Masjid Jamae) and finally to the Alexandra Canal.
This waterway has been transformed under PUB's Active, Beautiful and Clean Water (ABC Waters) Programme.

After the night walk, we made a short stop-over at Sheng Siong.

Celine Tan, 202
The trip was fun. We went to a Chinese Independent High School in the Batu Pahat area. The students had decorated the school very nicely. There were a lot of drawings and forms of expressions painted on the walls. Drawing is truly a form of art in that school. In Singapore, this might be viewed as vandalism. The school was built by the money donated by the people living in the area. It has a huge enrolment as they have classes from kindergarten to Secondary level. We visited a plantation. It was very cool as they would throw at least 100 patties to clean up the pollutions in the river. We also went to the KL tower. The KL Tower is a 421m high telecommunications and broadcasting tower. We went up to the observation deck where we managed to get a bird's eye view of the city. The view was spectacular. Lastly we went to the discovery centre (Petrosains) which is located in the Petronas Twin Towers. The exhibits at Petrosains tell the story of science and technology - with particular focus on the petroleum industry - in a fun and engaging manner. The boat ride in Malacca was also a highlight of the trip. As we cruised down the river at night, it was cool to see historical Malacca by the night. During this trip, I learnt to be independent. We had to do many things ourselves and we could not rely on our parents. I also learnt about time management, we must be at the place on time and must not be late.

The Malacca-KL trip was very fun and memorable. The school visit in Batu Pahat was informative. The graffiti in their classrooms is actually art and it was very nice. The students were allowed to decorate their classrooms with paint. I think such graffiti drawings should be allowed in Singapore schools as well. After that visit, we visited the traditional farm. The farm tour was very interesting and educational. We saw sweet potatoes, herbs, tapioca and fruits being grown. We learnt a lot of things about how the farm was kept. Then we headed to Malacca and had dinner at a famous Portuguese restaurant. The Portuguese food was spicy. There was a person singing and playing a guitar. His voice was very nice. He sang some songs in Portuguese too. He made us sing with him as well. We were very happy at that moment. We check in hotel and slept. The next day, we visited the Menara Kuala Lumpur (KL Tower). The tower is one of Malaysia's most recognisable and popular landmark. At the observation deck, which is at the height of 276 meters above ground level, we had a full view of KL city. The view was breath-taking. Each of us was given an audio tour head set that gave us information and explained certain buildings to us. It was very educational.

One of the most important values I learnt during the trip was teamwork. I have to be a team player and do my part by being punctual when the time has been set. When moving and playing in groups, I have to contribute actively to my team. The food was tasty and the accommodation was great. I feel proud to be a Singaporean. Comparatively, Singapore has a good and safe environment. The traffic congestion in KL was horrible. In the hotel room, I learnt to organize my own things and be independent. We had to take turns to bath and pack. At the Petrosains discovery centre, I also found out that Malaysia has many natural resources. Overall, the Malaysia trip was fun.

The NPCC trip was fun and enjoyable. On the first day, we went to Hwa Cheng High School. It had simple and beautiful paintings on wall of their classrooms. The students in the class worked together to design and paint the graffiti in their classrooms. It made a big difference to their learning experiences in the classroom. We then, proceeded to a traditional farm. We saw and learnt about the different plants and trees. I had a chance to eat the insides of the cocoa fruit. It tasted like mangosteen! The night, ended with a river cruise along Malacca river. On the second day, we went to KL Tower and the Petrosains Center. After dinner, we enjoyed our bowling session before calling it a night. The next day, we took the KTM train back to Singapore. After a 6 hour train ride, we all got off at Tanjong Pagar Train Station. It was fun and enjoyable trip. I learnt to be punctual and responsible for myself and others during the trip.

I found the overseas trip quite enjoyable. The first destination which was the Chinese Secondary School was a big and nice looking place. The classrooms were beautifully decorated with paintings at the back wall of each class. Most of them almost looked real. Each class had a unique theme. I wish classroom painting would be allowed in Singapore schools. The visit to the traditional farms was very interesting but I was not used to the sand and dirt. I enjoyed and learnt a lot from the visit to the Petrosains Discovery Centre. It is a modern interactive gazebo that enlightens knowledge about science. It is filled with many activities. The bowling was fun although I did not get a good score. I enjoyed playing the game with my friends. If I could, I would most definitely visit Kuala Lumpur again.

This trip has taught me more about the Malaysian lifestyle. I have learnt that people at the plantation have to work very hard to earn a living. They have to work every day to maintain the vegetables and plants. I have also learnt that the farmers are smart and invented something called 'mud patties'. This will enable them to clean a water body if it is polluted. I have also learnt more about the schooling system in Malaysia. The school that we visited was an independent Chinese school. The students there are mostly from wealthy families as the school fees is very expensive. Some students, who are not from a wealthy family, are given scholarships. The schooling system is almost similar to the Singapore system. The students have many enrichment classes, outdoor activities and CCA’s. I realise the diversity of the people and the food is almost the same between Singapore and Malaysia.

I learnt more about the history of Malaysia from the tour guide as well as the places we visited. On the first day of our trip, we visited a High School in Malacca. They introduced us about the history of their school and gave us a tour of their school compound to us. When we first went in the classroom, we were all fascinated by the drawing and painting on the wall. We were told that in Malaysia, students are allowed to paint, decorate and ‘vandalise’ their classroom walls. It is a form of artistic expression. On the second day of the trip, we went to Petrosains Centre where I learnt about the science and technology of the petroleum industry in a fun and interactive way. We even got to ride on an auto-machine that brought us to different places at one time.

Hia Meng Hong, 102
I enjoyed this trip as it is fun and educational. I learnt that Coco seeds can be eaten but it is very sour (when it is fresh). Latex will become glue-like substance after a while. Pineapples grow on top of the plant. There is specially made ‘mud-patties’ which are thrown into the dirty river, to clean it up. The patties are actually very stinky. Yeast is used for the fermentation process to make the patties. I also made new friends amongst the seniors. I am really looking forward to go for next year’s overseas trip with my peers!

This has been one of the best and most memorable school trips for me. During the 3 days in Malaysia, I enjoyed myself a lot and also learnt a whole lot of new things. The trip helped me to bond with Queensways fellow cadets. I also learnt to values such as responsibility, respect and discipline. The senior cadets were my role models during the overseas trip. I learnt more about NPCC and its expectations from them. From this trip, I have learnt to be more independent and to be responsible for myself. I am looking forward to attend more of such overseas trips.

This trip was fun and very exciting. I learnt many uses for various plants. Some are edible and some are not. The tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable.
This trip has also helped me learn more about Malaysia, its culture and history. When the trip started, I did not know anyone there, but by the end, I made new friends amongst my seniors and peers. The bowling game was a new experience for me. The boat ride along the river in Malacca was a good experience. The trip was very interesting and a great learning experience. I hope to go again next year.

From the farm visit, we learnt about different plants and the patty which cleans the river. The patty is a good innovation. We learnt that the Menara Tower in KL was built on top of a hill named Jalan Bukit Nanas and that the Petronas Twin Towers (457.2 meters) is taller than the Menara Tower (421 meters). The things in Malaysia are cheaper than in Singapore. I learnt that without teamwork we will be disorganised so we learnt to team up together and work as a group at all times. We also learnt to be disciplined, responsible and to respect our surroundings during the trip which was very important.

During this trip, I learned to respect other people’s beliefs and learned the way of life in Malaysian culture. I learned about the river cleaning using mud ball. The concoction in the mud ball is extremely effective in breaking down harmful bacteria in the dirty river. Farmers and locals use it to help clean up the rivers in the area. I experienced the power of teamwork during the bowling session. Each team must work together so that the team can succeed. I also learned to be disciplined. Discipline is the main thing in life, when is the time to play we can play but when is the time to be serious we must act so. The trip was educational as the tour guide also gave us a lot of information and history about Malaysia.

From the visit to the plantations, I learnt that plants have many uses and some taste different before they are cooked. Example, coco plant seed taste sweet but bitter after they are cooked. I also know how rubber is tapped. I tried my hand at tapping and was able to tap the rubber tree.

The NPCC trip to KL was very enjoyable. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit to the Science Centre and the bowling session. I would like more action for the year’s overseas trip. The hotel accommodation was clean and good. We had buffet breakfast and I was spoilt for choice. Lunch and dinner meals were equally fantastic. The food in Malaysia was delicious.

Day 3 - Our train ride home . . .

We arrived at the KL City Air Terminal where we boarded the train for Singapore.

One big happy Queensway NPCC family in the carriage. "All aboard!"

Upon arrival in Johor Bahru, we had to take all our belongings and clear the Malaysian immigration before boarding the train again.

Day 2 - KL Tower & Petrosains, The Discovery Centre.

The Kuala Lumpur Tower (KL Tower) is a 421m high telecommunications and broadcasting tower. We went up to the observation deck (at the height of 276 meters above ground level) where we got a bird's eye view of the city. The view was spectacular. Each of us was given an audio tour which told us the history of the prominent buildings in the KL skyline. Fact: The KL Tower is the seventh tallest telecommunication tower in the world.

Petrosains, The Discovery Centre is located on the fourth floor of Suria KLCC, PETRONAS Twin Towers, in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Petrosains is the perfect place for everyone to experience the showcase of exhibits featuring the wonders of science and technology related to the petroleum industry. We learnt about Malaysia's rich resources and appreciate the strength, resourcefulness and pioneering spirit of its people, through an innovative and hands-on learning environment.

Tonight's dinner was at HARTZ - a famous place for chicken buffet! Yum, Yum...

Day 2 ending with another fun activity - BOWLING! For some, it was their first time trying this sport. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this bonding session. Many were still discussing strategy and bowling techniques after the game was over :))

Day 1 - Dinner at the Portuguese Settlement, Melaka

The portuguese cuisine offered at Papa Joe was rich, aromatic and had unique flavours. They used herbs, spices, shallots,lemon grass, vinegar and tamarind juices in their cooking. We had the famous Portuguese grill spiced fish here. After dinner, Papa Joe put on his hat & took out his guitar to entertain us with a few songs.

We couldn't have ended the first night in any other better way than with the Melaka River Cruise! It was relaxing and a windy ride. We enjoyed the historical sights and scenic beauty of old Melaka town by the night.

Day 1 - At the Agritourism Sri Wangi Farm

Aunty Aisha, our tour guide, brought us around the farm, showing us different local plants and explaining some of its medicinal value to us.

The photograph below shows pineapples, mulberries, papaya and the starfruit plant.

Here Aunty Aisha is explaining to us the making and purpose of a mud patty, otherwise also known as the mud ball. These mud balls when thrown in the rivers help to break down the sludge and reduce the growth of algae. Effectively, the mud balls help clean up the rivers and seas. These mud balls are used in many environment conservation programs around Malaysia. Countries like Thailand and Japan also use these mud balls to disinfect the contaminated rivers.

The uncle at the farm showed us how rubber tapping was done using a knife. A small incision is made on the bark of the tree in a downward spiral direction. The spiral allows the latex to run down to a collecting cup. We were given a chance to tap. It was easy and fun. Rubber tappers tap at least 150 trees a day at the rubber plantations.

Cycling Southeast Asia, 2011: Messengers of Friendship

Meeting the Chinese adventure Jin Fei Bao and Austrian David Hiebaum

A team of seven (5 China, 1 USA, 1 Austria) are on their journey to send a friendship letter from the Mayor of Kunming, Mayor Zhang Zulin, to 6 countries in South East Asia. The group started their trip on Sunday, 9th of January 2011 and have cycled on their bikes through South China, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and are now in Malaysia to the final destination Singapore. In each country, Jin Fei Bao, the leader of the team will deliver the letter of friendship personally to the Mayor of each capital city.

It was truly a surprise and a pleasure to meet these adventures at Chinese High School where they were putting up before they continued their journey to Singapore. Mr Jin shared that most countries viewed China as an economic powerhouse, but people in China had become materialistic and he hoped his adventures would inspire others to pursue more than wealth. He also wanted to share the rich culture, history and environment of China through his contact with others during his journey. We wish the team all the best on their expedition.

In 1955, Dr. Yan Yuanzhang, the sixth principal for the school, established a teacher classification system, student grade placement system, class hierarchy system, work-study system, and scholarships. He introduced the idea of beautifying the environment,

the creation of the "Beautify The Classroom Contest", and other extra-curricular activities.

He also composed the lyric part of the school song.

The creation of 'beautifying' the classroom is still done today at the school. Here are some pictures of the classrooms. :) Each classroom has a specific theme to it. ALL the students will work together and decide on the theme, research possible ideas and later, paint it. The paintings are left for 2 years before the next layer of paint goes on the wall.

The school compound is very spacious and filled with greenery and flowers. Students sculpture pieces were displayed outdoors. They used recycled materials to design the sculptures.

We enjoyed our time interacting and chatting with the students as they brought us around their school compound. They answered our questions and explained to us how things were done in their school and what type of curriculum they had. Meeting the cycling expedition team there was a real bonus! :) Finally, it was time to say good bye to our new friends from Chinese High School.

3D2N Malacca & KL Educational Trip 2011

Day 1 - Visit to Chinese High School

The Chinese High School was founded in 1940. It celebrated its 70th anniversary last year. It has 2850 students as of January 2011.
In 1938, people from all walks of life in Batu Pahat wanted a Chinese secondary school in the town, so that primary school graduates would not have to go abroad. Construction work started in October 1938 after the school committee received Straits Dollar $50,000 from the public, and the offer of school land from some rich people.

Somehow, spicy that one of my friend cannot eat too much of it .
I think that the trip should be longer so that we can

During this Melaka trip, I have learnt that farmers have a hard time earning money .They have to use a stick with a knife tip to cut
the oil palm fruits down .For the pineapples they have to use a stick to punch a hole and then implant the suckers in .I saw the making of “Gula Melaka” and learnt that to make it you have to sacrifice, which is you want the sap then have to sacrifice the fruit. i visited the orphanage and learnt that life is tough in there. There is no air-condition in there and there have to house choirs unlike me. I have learnt to treasure what I have. I also learnt of the temple rules and what rare the important gods. Overall I have enjoyed the trip.

The Melaka trip was very fun as it was a chance for us cadets to get along and forge better relationship with one another. Other than being fun, it is interesting as we get to know how certain stuff is made. If given another chance, I would want to go again.

From the starting to the end, things went smoothly as it seems although there were a bit of confusion here and there during times. Although that has happened, people were still orderly and did not push/shove/shout to get what they need/want. People were cooperative and did tasks accordingly. The tour guide(s) had motherly figures which were happy to help, friendly, and gave detailed explanations about sightseeing points, gave info about GK of Malaysia and did what they had to do till the end. Everyone, not excluding the driver, did a good job on making the whole trip go well. Without everyone being vigilant, things could have gone wrong, e.g.: person missing, keys lost, wrong passport.
Things that could have been improved on were most probably the length of the trip. If the trip was longer, it would have been a better chance of bonding, communicating as well as be educated more about Malaysia/places that we visit.

I would like to thank everyone that has made this trip possible and smooth, especially to the Officers and the sec 4 peers.

I find that the Malacca trip is interesting and enjoyable. What I find the best and the most interesting is visiting the Malacca Cultural and Heritage Tour. Visiting the cultural areas makes me understand more of these historical places.The foods is very tasty as well. I very enjoyed the peranakan food the most. I hoped for more time for the stay in Mahkota Hotel and increase the duration for the shopping hours. I also hope for more toilet breaks during this long hours of staying in the bus while heading to and from Malacca.

I felt that the trip was fun and very interesting. It was the first time that I had seen a pineapple plantation, palm plantation, and a coffee bean plantation. I had learnt how ‘Gula Melaka’ was created. It was created from the flower of the coconut plant. Each day, they will tie one-third of the flower. The next day, they will squeeze the part that was that tied up. A brownish liquid will emerge. They will then collect a certain amount of the liquid and heat it up. While it is heating, they will add a bit of sugar these will make the liquid thick and sweet. Once it is hot enough, they will pour the mixture into cylinders to cool down. The end product would be a shape of the cylinder. These would be easy for them to arrange it in a box. They would then distribute these boxes to be sold.During this trip I had also learnt what the lifestyle of an orphan was, what kind of difficulties they had, and how they ended up at the orphanage. I realised that some of the orphans was there mostly due to financial difficulty. This was also the first time that I had been to an orphanage.
This trip has taught that some people are not as fortunate as us. I am glad that I am very fortunate to live a good life and without difficulties like the orphans. This trip also taught me that with hard work comes with great rewards.

The trip was fascinating. I have learnt a lot of things about Malacca and a bit of Malaysia. I liked the night the most as we got to do our own stuff with no disturbance. I also got to sleep very early in the morning. I hope the next time I go on a trip, we will spend more time on foot and learning more instead of staying on the bus for such a long time. But anyway, I still had lots of fun. The lunches and dinners were also very great. I ate to my fill every time. The time when we went to the shopping mall was marvelous. I hope that there will be more time for shopping and learning.

Reflection:
Since this is my first NPCC oversee trip, i don't really know what to expect. The trip turned out great, very fun. 1st day we went to the orphanage. The orphans were shy. But they were rather welcoming. We didn't get to spend alot of time with them though. I myself never even talk to one of them. Then came lunch. One of the best lunches ever. 4 sec 2 and 4 sec 3 = laugh nonstop. Couldn’t eat. HAHAHAHA. After the we visited the different farms. There was a alot of difference between my living lifestyle and the kampng style. The houses were made of wood and wood only. The children there had they're own games like tops and the yellow thingy(duno wat its called). Dinner next. Laughed non stop as well. After all this came the shopping. IT WAS BORING!!! i mean, besides the archery thingy, the mall was very quiet. Me and my sec2 friends shopped together. We bough chips and drinks to consume in the hotel. After that we checked into the hotel. Hotel was awesome. Own bed. Sweet! Then we partied all nite. Slept at 4. Room was very cold. Next day breakfast is amazing. Very full. Then theres the heritage tour. Sun was very hot. but the tour was good. I learned alot of stuff. Next lunch. As usual i laughed nonstop. Then we finally head home.

Feedback:
The guide was very experienced(thumbs up for the tour guide). She was very familiar with what shes doing.
Trip was short and sweet.
Interesting trip, learned alot.

Places for improvement:
LONGER TRIP!!! best 3day 2nite :D
More of such trip. every holiday should have 1 :D

After this 2day 1 night of Malacca trip, not only that I have enjoyed the trip, I have also learnt alot of thing.
I have learn how coffee beans were made and how Gula Melaka were made. We have also went to the Christ church.
I like about the coffee bean making because I have try the taste of the coffee i love the aroma of the coffee and I have bought the
coffee powder too..I hope there will be more trip like this to let us learn. we also been to the orphanage there are only 15 children staying there
most of them were abuse child..aft knowing that i felt a little sad. Of course i also enjoy the shopping in the night at pahlawa shopping mall and bought lots of stuff.

I liked trip and I think children at the Agape Shelter Orphanage were cute. I had fun in the trip especially the shopping part and being in the hotel.

I think this trip is quite meaningful because we can associate and mingled with the orphans and there are some chances for us to understand those pitiful children more, by giving them hope & love. While I believe there are more similar kind of places outside so i hope we can try going to these orphanage homes / old folks homes.

I think this trip can be improve on the places we go , because some of the places we visited during this trip were already visited during last trip, so I hope we can try visiting other new and historical places to expand our knowledge. We can try going to the orphanage homes to do some CIP such as cleaning or playing games with them =).

A: Visiting of the Orphanage because it's good to see them happy and looked so positive. I also felt sad for them because all of them are so young and already have no parents. Live entertainment at a local Portuguese restaurant and shopping.

3. Q: What have i learned?
A: Cosmetics, perfume, cooking oil are made from the oil palm and how they are harvested. Oil palm are also good for making profit. How the coffee powders are made. How the pineapples are planted.

I feel that this 2 day 1 night trip at Malacca was quite fun. I like the place when we were looking at how coffee beans were made and also get to learnt how to fold the ketupat. My Reflection
29 & 30 November 2010 were the days that I would always remember. My school’s NPCC unit went to Malacca for an educational overseas trip. I love the food that we ate during the meals. We ate organic food, Portuguese food & Peranakan food. The food was scrumptious. I also remember we had a mini-party when we reached the hotel. It was fun. We played different types of games with poker cards. I ate pizza, chips, French fries & drank all kinds of drinks. As I played, I also tried to bond with the seniors and interact with them better. I felt touched when I heard the stories of the orphans in the orphanage house. We entertained them with cheers and games .They had an enjoyable time with us. All in all, I had an enjoyable time.

Here it goes:
The trip was very enjoyable as it was a chance where we NCOs were able to teach or pass down our knowledge to our juniors. The trip was more or less like a educational as we visited historical places. But on the other hand we had alot of fun during the night time as we all played some card games and talked alot of rubbish(ABT ICE CREAM GIRL). Therefore we didn't get to sleep that long but we managed to catch some sleep on the bus. The trip to the orphanage home was unforgettable too, as those orphans sang and laugh and danced with us and mingled with us. The visit to the pineapple plantation &the oil plantatino was great indeed. We get to know how painstaking it is. The trip was short from my point of view. It should be 3 days 2 night. The reason is bus ride took almost half of our trip.

Hey peeps! The campcraft competition had just ended! and let's clap for the guys team and gals team man!

The campcraft competition was held at Pierce Secondary School.

We had the Lot 1 slot for the competition ! Lucky Number One! Hopefully we are lucky enough bah... hahahaha....

I learnt that there are 5 pillars of Defence that is the Civil Defence, Military Defence, Social Defence, Psychological Defence and Economical Defence. These five are important as they help us to make Singapore what it is today.

I feel safe here in Singapore as these five defences are here to make sure that Singapore are able to survive the difficulties that are coming in the upcoming years.

I can help by doing some of the defence and follow the examples of it so when there is danger ahead I am able to help people that are injured and support them during their difficulties.

I learnt what is total defence about and the importance of total defence and its significance.

After attending this course, taught by Mr Leong. I've learnt the 5 aspects of Total Defence, during crisis, we will be well equipped by the knowledge learnt. E.g. If the neighbours' house is on fire, we can apply those knowledge of civil defence. E.g. Having strong military personnel we will be able sleep safe and sound.

There are:

Civil Defence, taking care of myself and family when there is crisis.
Psychological Defence, to being united in pride and passion for my country.
Military Defence, to keep my country secure and keep up with the latest advancements in technology to meet newchallenges in the battlefield.

I learnt that our country has a backup plan in case anything happens. Even like when an elderly falls down, I will know what to do. If we are under attack, I can count on the army to protect us.

I feel that Total Defence is very important in Singapore. Without it, when any crisis happens, we will not be prepared and equipped with the skills needed to survive.

I have learnt that there are many ways to be a part of Total Defence.

Economical Defence- we have to constantly upgrade ourselves.
Military Defence-Guys of age 18 have to go through NS (National Service) to protect Singapore.
Psychological Defence- we must have faith in Singapore's future and never give up.
Civil Defence- we can learn CPR (cadiopulmonary resuscitation) to save lives.
Social Defence- we must mix around with other races and allow Singapore to continue on as a multi-racial society.

I feel that Singapore is a very safe country as we have very strong armforces to protect us from other challenging countries.

I will go and learn CPR so as to help in times of need.

From this, I can see that art museum is one of the vivid example where it had given phsycological defence and also social defence.

After attending this course, i've learnt the 5 aspects of Total Defence. During crisis, we will be well equipped by the knowledge learnt. During non-crisis, we are also able to apply the knowledge learnt. E.g. when let says, a person is drown in a pool, anyone besides the lifeguard can help to save the person by applying the knowledge of civil defence. E.g. During this downturn, with the knowledge of the economic defence, we are able to cope with this downturn. E.g. knowing that singaporeans are protected by the military personnel, we will be rest assured that Singapore is a safe place to live in.

After attending this course, i feel proud to be a Singaporean as i know that during crisis time, Singaporeans are well equipped with the knowledge to tackle any problems face.

Life as a Cadet in NPCC

I decided to join NPCC when i was in Sec 1, actually it was not my idea at first as my parents forced me to join.After i joined NPCC, i gradually came to like it and enjoyed the activities we do in NPCC such as Drills, Campcraft, etc. At Sec 1, there wasn't much interesting activities to do in NPCC but except practicing drills and camps which i would consider this 'phase' very boring.I am so happy, i got my very first rank... Lance Corporal...!!

However, things take a different turn at Sec 2 in NPCC. At Sec 2, we get to do more exciting stuffs such as shooting, joining Adventure Camps(tougher than normal camps but more fun)which is only once a year for Sec2 and Sec3. There was also the Educational trips organised by our Officers, we went for AFormosa in Malacca.We also went for the courses during June holidays such as CD courses and SANA courses which was actually quite interesting and fun for us. I finally got my Corporal rank after much waiting... sigh... at least come late better than never... right?

Things started to get more and more challenging and at the same time more and more fun in Sec 3.At Sec3, we get to organise the first cohesion camp for that year but i have to admit, it is not as good as the one organised by our seniors... but at least we did our best and we manage to learn our lessons from that experience.We also get to go for the 2nd Adventure camp known as the Survival Camp in Sec3, which was very fun and interesting compared to the one we had at Sec2.There we get to do the FlyingFox , Jetty Jump( which i enjoyed alot and i even went for the 2nd and 3rd round...!), etc. Although though we had lot of fun inNPCC at Sec3, our responsibility grew larger as we became the Cadet Leaders in Sec3. We got our Sergeant rank at the start of Sec3 NPCC...yeah...!!! And finally some of us which included me got the Staff Sergeant rank in the late July of year 2008, dreams come true at last... NPCC had trained us all as young adults with great responsibility and discipline so we should do something in return for it.Even though the Sec 3s are going to step down next year, i believe we can do our best to serve NPCC in the remaining days of our stay in NPCC.

This post is about what i have learn through out my secondary school life in NPCC.

NPCC was the CCA that i had choosen in Sec 1. I decided to have NPCC as my only CCA through out my secondary school life. Npcc was the one that make me learn alot of values through out the activities that i had, example having campcraft, drills, camps planning.

Having camps build up our bonding among each other, getting to know each other well and live together. Campcraft had also build up our team work, coorperation when we meet some difficulties.

Npcc is a multi-racial CCA and we are able to develope racial harmony in queensway NPCC.

Racial harmony was one of the important keys to success in NPCC as 1 cadets alone was not as strong as a group of cadets. I am able to applied the values of what i have learn in NPCC when i am out in the sociaty. NPCC had turn me into a much more responsible and descipline young adult through out the years.

I am glad that majority of us had done our part to make NPCC a successful CCA.

The day that were hopping is here, 10 october where our second cohesion camp was held. Me and my squad fall in at the parade square with the sec 1s , the IC who is me took their attendance and count the total strength of the squad. After a while, we hurried excitedly up the bus and headed to the National Museum for our Police Heritage Proficiency Badge.

On the way to the museum we were all laughing and giggling and talking among ourselves. When we reach the museum we were ask to fall in at the museum bus bay and waited for our turn to enter the museum. We were instructed by the CI that we must behave ourselves inside the museum and always minimize our noise level.

When we were inside the museum, the staff gave us a electronic device named "The Companion". It is a device which no need a demonstrator to follow you around. With this "Companion" you can just listen to the device to tell you about the history of Singapore.

Inside there was a very historical thing that was nostalgic. It's the olden days "funeral". In those days funerals were very grand, I can say this because their funeral is very expensive and they told everyone around the village to let the other neighbours see. And so I found it very interesting.

Next we went to the fashion gallery to see those olden days clothes that they wore and how they were made.

After that, we fall in again in the same place and headed back to school again...

MUSEUM trip

All of us fall in and get ready to go to the museum in order to obtain the heritage badge.
It is a nice place where by Singapore govt have put in alot effort,time n money to upgrade the facilities there.All of the facilities down there were quite new.''The Companion'' is being introduced[it shd be rather costly lar] Every people who walk into the museum gallery will get to hold on this companion,it actually act as a talking textbook.The pros of this gadgets is tat it will impress tourist and able to tell people tat the museum is being upgraded...lol..can see the effort lah...Cons is tat it is not a palm size gadget like a moblie phone,but a big gadget tat u will need to sling it,it also have wired earphone,so people will need to listen thru the earphone,it get tangled very easily as the user is walking abt in the gallery.

One of the exhibits in the gallery was the famous Singapore Stone, i find it rather fake lar. The stone was originally part of a giant boulder, and had inscriptions on it, which until now no one could decipher. The boulder once stood at the mouth of the Singapore River, but was blasted by the British...... This Singapore Stone is the only surviving fragment of it,so its rather not possible for it to put in the museum in such a way tat anyone can touch it even thought tat there is a ''NO TOUCHING'' sign down there..As if the sign works. It also has a long history behind it. But there was one thing in certain. There was civilization in Singapore before Stamford Raffles came and founded Singapore.

After this, we went to the Food Living Gallery, which exhibit some of the traditional equipment used by the street hawkers from the 1950s to 1970s, as well as old soft drink bottles.So memorable.When i step in i smell food immediately!!!!... lol food gallery shd have food smell lor...I smell the smell is like ''Ham chi pang''[咸煎饼]..there are alot old stalll down there.Got the nasi lemak stall ang alot other hawker stall in 1950s as it will not be possible to see this scene in Singapore anymore...SOB...

10th Oct 2008 was the day where during our cohesion camp, we visited the singapore national museum.

Our first museum tour was the history gallery, to be frank i was not so excited as i've seen most of the heritage gallery. nevertheless we went in and explore, with this device strap around our neck - our computer tour guide. As i went in i dint bother much about the front part of the heritage gallery as ive seen it before. I went to the other parts of the heritage gallery which i dint manage to cover.

After touring that area, i and a group of friends leave the gallery early, so we were given permission to enter the other parts of the museum. One of the parts that i went in to was the fashion gallery. It was quite amazing to see the fashiong 50 years ago everything was totally different from what we wear today. There is one part in the gallery where they talk about singapore bands gaining fame and constantly going out to countries like malaysia to perform. last time in singapore the bands that were the best is said to be the band that can mimic artist from the west like elvis presley etc. as (if im not wrong) bands from the west hardly came to singapore and perform.

The songs being made 40 to 50 years ago is also quite, not bad, but it is abit slow compared to our modern rock or pop songs. one of the song was made by a band called The Quest and their songs was quite nice. I remembering watching a tv show about this band, it said that this band was first started out by this two guy from queenstown secondary school. soon one way or another more people came in to form a band. But this band started out with no money to buy the instruments, and they keep borrowing instruments and practise to fufil their dream and well they did manage to achieve it. But someway or another (i cant remember what they said) our music industry died down thus there was a peroid of time where there wasnt much people into bands.

Anyway all in all it the visit to the museum was interesting and thanks to this second visit, i managed to sort of complete the tour in the history gallery.

One of the highlights of the cohesion camp held from 10-11 October is the trip to the National Museum of Singapore, located along Stamford Road. The group consists of sec 1s and sec 3s, accompanied by our teacher Mr Leong.

Excited chatters filled the entire bus as the lot of garbled on and on to pass time spent reaching the the NSM.

Time seems to come to a standstill, but, we finally REACHED! :D

We were amazed and overwhelmed by the wonderful and unique architecture and design of the museum building. The objective of the trip is to allow cadets to better understand the history of Singapore from settlements to nation-present.

Equipped with high tech headgear, we entered the "Glass Rotunda" which allows us to gain entry into the Singapore Heritage Gallery. There is no deny to the improvement of technology as the headgear provided provided us the information of each station in the gallery, practically, a WALKING TOURGUIDE! :D

Separated into different groups, we explored the various stations starting from the period of pre-1819 (founding of Singapore) to 1971.

I learnt the beginnings of Singapore as an ancient settlements in the 1300s and goes on exploring and tracing the coming of the British and understanding how our pioneering immigrant forefathers came here to build a town and port. It also traces the growth of Singapore and how events that happened outside the country has affected the island. One of the most important event that had happened is the Japanese Occupation, for which many life of our forefathers are affected.

I understood the determination of the people in struggling against all odds toward achieving independence and striving a nation :) Important characters such as Sir Stamford Raffles, William Farquar, Elizabeth Choy, David Marshall and Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

This trip is truly an unforgettable one, one that one should never miss, where it allows cadets to view various historical sources and evidences thus understand more about our
HIS-tory!

Remember, history is alive, exciting and interesting, it traces back to what our forefathers had come so far, to become what we are today!

The trip to the National Museum

The trip to the National Museum was where Secondary 3 Npcc cadets went during the camp on 10th October.Upon reaching there,I was greeted by a cooling air-conditioned museum with a beautiful structure,not forgetting the great artefacts it had and the video clips and anecdotes of what Singapore had went through.It also tells me about the steps Singapore had taken to the present today.It was definitely a great experience.Well,it was also my first encounter in a museum with a efficient gadget,which I thought was creative, that could aid and accompany me during my time in the museum.It was like a 'real' tour guide,with its verbal and written explanations which could satisfy and sustain my curiousity and definitely an answer key for the questions that visitors were dying to ask.This trip had definitely benefited me as it brought insights into the history of Singapore from the rules of the various rulers till the age we are living in right now.Standing in Singapore since 1849,the National Museum has a proud collections of 11 artefacts like he Singapore stone,Gold Ornaments from East Java's Sacred Hill,Frank Athelstane Swettenham,the coffin of Tan Jiak Kim and Munshi Abdullah's Will presently.Regrets was definitely not what I felt about the trip as I had really learnt a lot from the trip.It was truly an eye-opening experience for me.

Trip to the National Museum

The sec 3 npcc cadets went for the museum trip during the cohesion camp held at our school on 10th of october 2008.It was a very nice experience for us, especially to me as it was my first time to the museum.
When we reached our destination, we were each given a "Companion"( a device which will guide us through the museum) to be kept along with us when we enter the museum.I saw a lot of artifacts which each of them tell us about the stories of Singapore from the time it was founded by Sir Raffles to becoming a straits settlement, from becoming the"Invincible fortress" to being defeated by the Japanese during the World War 2.I learned how harsh life was in the past, many men especially the chinese, were addicted to opium which they saw as their ways of release from the harsh lifes and starvation.It was a hard time for the rickshaw pullers as they worked very hard day and night, but what they earned is not enough to even feed themselves.During the World War 2, after Singapore has fallen to Japan, life was even harder for the people living there as the japanese soldiers uses means of torture to get rid of their enemies.However , it was their perseverance that pulled them through.
After Singapore had gained independence, the country struggled to survive on its own and tried to built its own defences.Even though Singapore merged with Malaysia, the relationship between them begun to sour and they finally fell out, resulting in Singapore out of Malaysia. It was their perseverance that Singapore is able to survive until today.
I learned from the trip that i should persevere through whatever things i do in life and that i must not give up hope.

This blog post is about my life in National Police Cadet Corps. It is basically describing my thoughts and feelings about the events/activites and views of NPCC.

Sec One
It is in the year AD 2006 that I officially joined NPCC. It was one of the major turning point of my life, as NPCC has a huge impact on my life. On the first training, I was surprised to see 2 acquantances of mine in NPCC as my Sirs. They were Daniel (my friend's brother) and Kelvin(my brother's friend).
When I was in sec one, I was introduce even more deeply into the term "teamwork". Although in Primary School we were taught "teamwork", but it was only in Secondary School( specifically NPCC) that I truely learnt about it. Teamwork is VERY VERY important in every aspects of life, be it camps or jobs. It was through camps and trainings that the meaning of "teamwork" was taught.
There was a cohesion camp in Sec one which I really really enjoyed a lot. I remembered that my group name was "P24", with the P meaning punctuality and 24 meaning 24 hours, further signifying the importance of punctuality. It was one of the most creative camps that I ever attended. The camp coordinators used marbles to count points(which was rather creative) , and the activities were really fun. It played a huge impact in my sec one NPCC life , because I really learnt a lot from my seniors and about teamwork.

Sec two
Sec 2 saw another huge impact in my secondary school life, be it in class or in NPCC. I attended many activites and courses held by NPCC, such as overseas trip, Adventure Training Camp and many "whole day courses" such as CD and sana.
Overseas trip-
Being in sec 2 with good attendance has allowed me to go overseas with my squadmates,seniors and Sirs. We went A'Farmosa, but not the historical side of it. It was my first time going overseas with my friends and teachers, and I was really excited about it. We went to the "more fun" part of A'Farmosa, which includes the cowboy town and some other places. I remember that we stayed overnight in a villa, and that villa was HUGE(though I didn't stay or go into a villa before). We had much fun from the overseas trip, and is still deep in my memories.
Adventure Training Camp-
Whoa this is the longest camp that I ever attended. 3 days 2 nights, almost like a tour trip, just that it was less enjoyable. Teamwork was emphasized even more in this camp, as many of the activites were impossible to finish without teamwork. It was through this camp that I had my first experience of kayaking. I heard my brother saying that "kayaking sibei(which means "is very") fun. Don't worry, ATC confirm have one", and it was true. However,some parts of the ATC was quite boring. We kept getting scolded by the Sirs. ATC is both fun and boring in certain aspects.
"Whole day courses"
One example of the whole day course was the Civil Defence Course ( CD for short). It was the first time that I ever been to a fire station(sounds like a station on fire to me) and also the many "firsts" in my life. It was quite enjoyable, mostly because of the "many first in my life". Luckily, I found a group photo taken by my madam. It is the one shown below( though the quality is kind of lousy). Try spotting me XD

We learnt how to do Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR for short) through this course. It is a set of actions which can save someone's life in times of needs. However, 1 wrong action and the victim might die(or so I think). There are many steps, and might break the rules of this competition, so I shall not go into further details. Through this CD course, I learnt many important but sort of simple skills which can be applied in normal daily lives (in times of needs, of course).
In sec 2, I also have the chance to hold a 0.22 revolver, and seriously, the feeling was damn good. I always seen in TV dramas how the police shoot the targets with it and it was like "whoa, so accurate". In the end, I totally sucked at it. Many of the bullets flew to don't know where, and seriously, the feeling wasn't really good, being the few who failed the live shooting. But, I couldn't be bothered with it and that feeling was gone after a few hours( YES, a few hours).
There are a lot events in sec 2 but I couldn't recall it, my bad.

Sec 3
One of the most "colourful" part of my life in NPCC until now was when I was in sec 3. The reason is known by many of my squadmates, and most probably the Sirs and OC of my school's NPCC unit.
Campcraft competition-
This is the only competition that really brought out the teamspirit and many other aspects that was lying dominant in me and many of my squadmate's and senior's heart. Teamwork was shown in many of the campcraft trainings and the feeling is quite nice. I never knew that one competition could bring out the teamspirit in many. Even my madam said that she really saw huge teamspirit within the campcraft team and she was proud of it. Even though the results of the competition is lousy, but it was the process which I really enjoyed and the lessons learnt had really taught me a lot, be it in NPCC or in other things.
0.22 Live Shooting-
Again, I really suck at this shooting, scoring as low as a single-digit mark.
Overseas trip (to A'Farmosa again) -
All the places that I went in this overseas trip was the same as last year, just that we are staying overnight in a condotel (condominium+hotel=condotel, and yes its the real name). It was a nice experience, but kind of spooky. The sounds made by the wind blowing against the glass door was rather freaky, and it was made in the wee hours of the night. It resembles the sounds made by a ghost. However,this trip was still fun.
Whole day courses-
Leadership and Mentoring Skills Course(LMSC for short)-
One of the most tiring course that I ever been, but was considered lucky due to some communication error( I'm not critisizing anyone). Other schools need to wear Full NPCC uniform, but we only need to wear PT kit, which is more comfortable.
I learnt many leadership and mentoring skills from this course, and it WILL be helpful in my future career life. This course is very important from the way I see it.

This is more or less a detailed summary of my NPCC life, and to be frank, I feel rather honoured and lucky to be able to join NPCC as my CCA for my Secondary School.

This blog post is about my life in National Police Cadet Corps. It is basically describing my thoughts and feelings about the events/activities and views of NPCC.

At first when I just enrolled into sec1,I had a serious problem finding a CCA as i am not decisive enough.I always feel tat I may regret to join certain CCA... As I've got few friends quitting their CCA....At first,my father have a long talk with the NPCC OC in queensway secondary regarding abt this particular CCA......so its rather confirmed that I will join this CCA...Since I'm not decisive enough I will let my father choose for me...But somehow I did not put this CCA as my choice when I went to the computer lab to field in the form of enrolment to a CCA .So NPCC is not my CCA in the first place..
I seriously don't understand if its fated or what....I remember its a friday. Instead of going home my friend wanted me to wait for him till his CCA end and go home together,while I was sitting with them at the bus bay, a tall guy probably from upper sec approached and ask if it was all of us here are the new batch of sec 1 and joining NPCC.All my friends said yes except me as I said no......at first tat guy thought that I was joking with him,fooling around,and he shouted stop playing its not funny....then my frends added that I was really not a NPCC cadets....So when they fall in the sir ask me whether I am keen or not to join this CCA..I felt that since all my friends joined so I should join also since my father also wanted me to join this CCA.I said I am keen to join.So ended up I joined NPCC...........................~~~Fates~~~

So in the year 2006 I officially joined NPCC. It was one of the major turning point of my life, as NPCC has a huge impact on my life.So I actually ended up in NPCC and attended the trainings.
The tall guy I mentioned was Kelvin.At first he is only a In-Charged,subsequently he became the Sir...My squad have two In-Charged,one of them is kelvin the one I mentioned another one was Alif.Both of them taught us drills,campcraft and some lecturing......Kelvin was always the rather quiet one and he will be the one doingdemonstration,while Alif will be the one teaching.In sec 1, NPCC taught us of many values and increased the bonds of our squad and understand the importance of teamwork.

In secondary 2. there was a huge change in my life, be it in class or in NPCC. I attended many activites and courses held by NPCC, such as overseas trip, Adventure Training Camp and many courses such as CD and sana.They taught us a lot of knowledge and we obtain some badges for attending these courses.

oversea trip-
I had good attendance and this had allowed me to go overseas with my squadmates,seniors and Sirs. We went to the "more fun" part of A'Farmosa, which includes the cowboy town and some other places. I remember that we stayed overnight in a villa, and that villa is very big. Even though the trip is only 2 day 1 night ,we had much fun from the overseas trip.

ATC (adventure training camp)
People alway said that in NPCC the most lagi worst camp is ''ATC'' This is even reflected in camp songs...My school OC said that the camp is fun and really enjoyable that you will able to meet a lot of people from other school and u will be very sad at the last day of the camp.. this is one of the longest camp I've attended.This are the worst days....The sir down there are not very friendly....
When you go from one place to another ,you walk abit and they ROAR at you!!!!The worst part is that the food is bad as they are food rations,such as maggi mee,can foods and some salt.These food are so awful that after the 3 day camp I never dared to eat the canned pineapple again.....
Even though we experienced such thing..most importantly is that we learnt from the camp.
from the camp it taught us to bond with one another.we also have great teamwork!!!!!

Sec 3
Hahah finally we reached here!!!!!!!! We are the senior in the squad,people started to look up to us.We took charged in many thing,for example, sec 3s in-charged of the sec 1 and 2......I became very stressed....I was one of the in-charged...and I finally got to know and understand that to be a leader is not easy,because when you lead,you don't only lead yourself,you lead all the people who follows you ,so when you make mistake...all the people who follows you will suffer.Its not easy to be a leader.But everyone can be a leader. I got promoted to Staff Sergent,even more stressed as people will have a higher expectation of me.

I have been a NPCC cadet for around 3 years. When I think back, I find time flies really fast. It only seem not too long ago, I was just a private NPCC cadet who do not know anything about NPCC and now I’m a SSGT who know more about NPCC. Through all this years, we cadets attended camps, trainings and courses conducted by the school and NPCC HQ. Nevertheless, we cadets of Queensway Secondary School do contribute to the society by doing some community work. This year, we cadets had done quite a few of community works. Example: visiting the senior citizens centre and done some area cleaning so that the senior citizens have a good and clean environment to spend their past time at. Some of us even serve the dessert to the senior citizens when it was their tea break. These were some photos of our service there.

In my entire secondary 3 life as a cadet, I had attended
- SANA course (sec 2)
-Civil Defence course (sec 2)
-Leadership & Mentoring course (sec 3)
-Police Knowledge course (sec 3)

All these courses are really very beneficial to us. We had really learned a lot and enjoy ourselves from each of the courses.

We also attended 2 major camps in our entire NPCC life as a cadet. One was the Adventure Training Camp for the secondary 2 cadets and the other was Survivor Camp for the secondary 3 cadets. Both camps were carried out at the Camp Resilience at Pulau Ubin. The camps were very exciting and it was a kind of camps to mould us into people who are willing to take new challenges.
For ATC, we cadets had gone through camp familiarization, orienteering around Pulau Ubin, Pioneering, Adventure Fortress and low-ropes obstacle course.
During my survivor camp, I also went through kayaking, Jetty jump, team building games and intermediate Challenge Course (ICC).
Truly speaking, I’m a girl who is afraid of height. Going through ICC, I was very afraid. My legs tremble when I going through it. Thanks to the support of my instructor and fellow peers, I was able to complete my entire ICC challenge. I really enjoyed both camps and love the campfire for both two years.

Soon I will be stepping down soon during 2009 April. I’m proud to be a NPCC cadet and the spirit of NPCC will never end in me even if I had step down.

Life As An NPCC Cadet

It been roughly 3 years since I first became an NPCC Cadet, and it has taught me a lot of life skills that is useful to me. NPCC like all Uniformed Groups have unique activities that most people would not be able to enjoy till they are much older in life. Who would thought of a 14 year old could build a shelter with just bamboo sticks, twine and poncho or who would imagine that a 14 year old could shoot a pistol – in Singapore of course.

It has been one long ride from a Sec 1 Cadet to a Sec 3 Cadet. When I first joined, things were quite new and there were sets and sets of rules and regulations to follow. We are not used to doing simple things like saying “Good Afternoon Sir or Ma’am” or saying “Room” when the Sir or Ma’am enters the room – between it sounded like Groom when we were first taught and we were like wondering what is Groom? Eventually we were used to doing all the things and we have also gotten used of the multiple scolding whenever things are not done properly or when we have made a mistake. Not long after we joined, our life would be evolved around the Dark Blue uniform, and we feel good wearing those uniforms. However things don’t look right at the start, some of us our uniformed is wrongly ironed, some of us did not know how to polish our boots and some of us did not seasoned the Beret properly. We screwed up our uniformed and the poor sirs and Ma’am have to explain everything to us again on how to do this and that. Eventually we more or less learn how to do things the proper way.

Doing Drills in Sec 1 i have to admit it, it is boring in a way. Our first drill was to stand at attention and stand at ease – serdia and senangdiri. We were like doing that for countless of times till we get it right, and its pure plain boredom doing it just to get that perfection of the bang – that’s right basic first! But soon we got that near solid bang and there we learn more drills that are fun and nice to do.

It has always been our joy to watch other people march in parades, but now we ourselves could take part in it. My first parade was on National Day when I was in Sec 2. When I first went for my first rehearsal, I was quite nervous, as I did not really know what would happen next. I admit I was complaining about the long hours of rehearsals that we have to do and also standing like a statue for I’m not sure how long, but it was like a killer to me. When the big day arrive, you can literally feel your heart pounding in excitement, at the same time you feel nervous as you hope that you would not screw up the whole parade. After the parade, you feel the sense of relief and an indescribable feeling.

One of the big things in Uniformed Groups is camp, and my first camp in NPCC was a cohesion camp. It allows us to bond together as a whole and we can learn a lot of teambuilding skills in camp. However our camps are not the type of leisure outing which u camp in the forest and do fly-fishing by the river. Our camps also requires us a lot of discipline and well responsibility – for your belongings! We have to rush for shower and finish our food all on time, and when time is not met, you get a scolding from your CIs and sirs and that dampened your mood. ATC is much worse, there are so many CIs around and when we do things wrongly, we get scolding from not one not two but many CIs. We thought of them like a time bomb or a volcano ready to explode at any given point of time, but who could blame them? They are there to get the camp going and without them, I think we would be a bunch of monkeys running around – Credit goes to them and those who have helped out considerably.

Eventually at the last day of the camp you are like ‘Yes! Last day of camp can go home and sleep’ and then there’s the debrief, where you had to write your reflection and give your feedback. One of the most indescribable irritating questions is, “Is the camp fun?” CIs, Sirs and all of us knew it, the answer is “Fun, fun, fun, oh the camp is fun!” then the sir goes “what is fun” and you are like “er… everything is fun, the games is fun and that is fun and this is fun…” Yeah right! Cadets are just so afraid to talk about the not so fun part and we will always find means and ways to end the debrief as quick as possible – you just have to admit it, even a CI who was once a cadet admit it. Come to think of it, the camp allows us to do things we probably won’t get to do in our lifetime. It helps us to get away from our comfort zone of life computer gaming and stuffs, and help us to experience new outdoor activities that could not be largely found in our small little country of ours.

Now as a Sec 3 cadet, we are like the seniors of the squad after the Sec 4 went through the pass out parade. We have to guide our juniors with our experiences and using the MOI. Sure it feels good leading, but now we have to learn how to control a squad, and learn the joy and pain of organising camps. Also you will get to experience a wee bit of what the CI does just to get things going, and the frustrations when the standards are not met.

Overall, NPCC can be fun, boring, frustrating or whatever you can think of, but it is the big word "Teamwork" and the "ALL FOR ONE, ONE FOR ALL” attitude, that really bond us together and make NPCC a whole lot interesting.

There was a NPCC cohesion camp which was held from 10-11 October 2008. The main activities was a trip to the museum( for sec 1 and 3 cadets) on the first day and a CIP on the second day.

First day
We all fall in, and placed our things into a classroom before going to the museum. At the museum, we were given a ticket. We then headed into the Singapore History gallery. It displays the history of Singapore from modern times downwards to 14th century Temasek at the bottom of the structure of the gallery. Before going in, we had to line up and were given a portable hand-held machine, named "Companion". It was like a tour guide in the gallery, and all we had to do was to press the number buttons on the companion (the number were shown in parts of the gallery). By doing so, the "tour guide" in the companion can explain the history and informations of the exhibits shown in the gallery with details. It was quite a nice machine, just that it was a bit bulky.

One of the exhibits in the gallery was the famous Singapore Stone . The stone was originally part of a giant boulder, and had inscriptions on it, which until now no one could decipher. The boulder once stood at the mouth of the Singapore River, but was blasted by the British. This Singapore Stone is the only surviving fragment of it, and has a long history behind it. But there was one thing in certain. There was civilisation in Singapore before Sir Stamford Raffles came.

After the trip to the History gallery, my squadmate and I decided to tour around the whole museum, since there was much time left and had nothing to do. We decided to head into the Living Galleries. It consists of 4 main galleries, namely " Fashion, Food, Photography and Film and Wayang".

This gallery features the clothes worn by women from the 1950s-1970s. There was also a special section, which had a large display of the different fabrics. We were allowed to touch and feel them. There was also a section which had the many different (but all old) sewing machines, which very few have them now. They were all old but was well preserved, and many old aunties should recognise them.

Food Living Gallery
After this, we went to the Food Living Gallery, which showcase some of the traditional equipment used by the street hawkers from the 1950s to 1970s, as well as old soft drink bottles. One of the exhibits was the traditional ice-shaving machine( more commonly known as the ice kachang machine). This was a machine used by traditional ice kachang seller to shave ice to make ice kachang for his customer.

The next stop was the Photography Living Gallery. It showcase some of old photographs, cameras and marriage certificate. The old cameras were HUGE, while one was very small, and had gears in it.

Film and Wayang Living Gallery
This is my favourite gallery out of the 4 . By the time we got into the gallery, an old horror movie was being shown. The whole movie was in black and white, meaning that it was quite old. One funny thing about the movie was that it isn't scary at all, maybe due to the time differences between the present and the time the movie was made. One of the machine behind the screens was the old GIGANTIC movie player.

After the trip to the museum, we had some free time because dinner starts an hour later. During the free time, there were no activities. It was " free and easy". I only had an oreo for dinner, as I wasn't feeling quite well. After dinner, it was games. They played captain ball and soccer, while I just sat around listening to my mp3(again due to me not feeling well).

Just as I was feeling better, they started playing hide and seek(not successful,and I'm going to say the reasons later). I joined in, and being the only sec3 cadet, I was the team leader. Our team was supposed to hide, and the sec1 girls in my team quickly rushed to the classroom. When we were hiding, it was god damned bloody hot. But, after a few minutes, my squadmate sms-ed me to get back to hall. I had bad vibes about this.
They cancelled the game because many of the girls said that they saw a gho*t in a toilet. Just as I heard that, I felt excited, because I'm interested in such stuff. There had been many stories of it in our school,but this one was the first of its kind. Some of my squadmates and I decided to visit those "haunted places" in our school, but didn't eventually.

During the late night, my squadmate (zhiping) and I started to play chinese chess. Each round was about 1hour due to us being tired and some more reasons. In the end, many of the sec3 didn't sleep. Some of them were chatting with the Sirs, and some just sitting around in the classroom listening to the music.

Second day
As usual in this camp, we slacked. But there was one activity which we could not slack- Community Involvement Program (aka CIP). We were to go around some blocks collecting some newspaper for certain charity organisations. It was tiring, but in the end, we all found it fruitful. Our group ( Jet and my group) collected so much newspaper that even though it was just a short walk from the grouping place, we had to use the trolley. Luckily, some kind aunty gave us a bag in which we could put the newspaper in. We unloaded the newspapers in the grouping place and had some cold drink. It WAS VERY NICE. Under a hot Sun doing such job and after which free drink was given is almost heavenly. This was how the camp ended. This was one of the slackiest camp ( most probably because it was to help us de-stress) which I enjoyed very much.

Our six hours on Tuesday 13th March 2007, was spent in a bus all the way to A’Famosa, Malacca. As soon as the ten Sec 2s and twelve Sec 3s gathered together with our two OCs, Mr Chng Eng Peng and Mr Terence Leong, we boarded the bus and began our ride to Malacca. We were loaded with many gadgets like food, MP3s, handphones and poker cards and entertained ourselves easily.

Lunch was held at KFC and the food there was very different.they had bigger pieces of chickens, different set of meals and had cheesy wedges instead of cheesy fries. Furthermore, the food is so much cheaper!

Finally reaching A’Famosa at 1430 hrs, we went our separate ways in a Banana Truck to Villa D’Faro, where Sec 3s occupied bungalow 802 with Mr Leong and bungalow 800 for Sec 2s with Mr Chng. The ride in the Banana Truck was so fast aand there was no doors but chains at the side. But the Banana Truck however never looked like a banana, just a truck. We were given an hour rest at our respective bungalows and explore whatever was in the bungalow.

Each bungalow had a mini swimming pool parked outside like a Jacuzzi, four rooms one living hall, two toilets connected to two rooms and one small kitchen with not much appliances in it. We just didn’t get why the ceiling was made to be so high up. Located in each room wad also air conditioners and television sets for some rooms. We rested, bathed, enjoyed the comfort of the television sets and then headed for Cowboy Town at 1530hrs.

What other better mode of transport than the Banana Truck. It took us to Cowboy Town located quite far away from our bungalows in about ten to fifteen minutes only. Right outside stands a huge bronze statue of a cowgirl in a seductive pose another statue of a cowboy on a horse at the entrance. Where else to start our fun than at the bowling alley!

We were given two free games and teamed up in groups of four. The first round was like a test drive and the second a mini competition. Who won? I forgot. The funniest part of the whole game was that a bird was leaving in the alley and flew around the place once we started to play. I do remember that Mr Chng played fairly well so as Vikneshwaran, Helmi and Mr Leong. Obviously there were a lot of lucky strikes by most of us and havoc fun was entirely present in there. We played for a good two hours before leaving for dinner at Huang di Restaurant, a Chinese restaurant but halal.

We were served with Chinese tea, seafood soup, and various kinds of side dishes like sweet and sour fish and spicy chicken. The dinner ended quick and another two hours was given to us to roam around the area only.

A few of my friends and I had a lust for bowling and went to enjoy it some more. We played so much that we missed the Red Indian Show at experienced pain on our poor fingers. We slowly rushed our way to the Carnival Street, going in and out of the Shopping Village and were in time for the carnival. There was a parade of animals, cowboys, red Indians and dancers. The carnival ended off with a big bang of beautiful fireworks. It had an array of colours and patterns and will be your downfall if you came to Cowboy Town without witnessing the fireworks.

The first day there ended just like that and we headed back to our bungalows in the none other fast moving Banana Truck. The rest of the night was spent in our own rooms.

The early took off with a trip to the Clubhouse for a buffet breakfast. Since it was a buffet, we took a few refills and headed to our next destination to Animal World.

Again we had two hours for free roaming. We went for a tour around an enclosed part of the zoo in a ‘caged’ truck. Another downfall if you miss this tour too. We were filled up with excitement as animals were seen every few meters we go by. Not to forget animal dung was around too and one of them looked like grapes. Obviously there was a lot of filming and the coolest animals were the sun bear cubs and lions/tigers. The cubs easily attracted us tourists with their cute actions like sitting up showing their white patch on their chests and begging for food which then led to the stealing of stealing their own siblings share of food. The ride ended with a ‘roller coaster’ ride where there was a steep slope going down and a boulder in the middle of the track at the bottom of the slope.

We then went straight for the elephant show after alighting from the ride. The elephants proudly welcomed us to their show by putting one of their front legs over the other. Entertainment was next. They showed us what they were capable of with their acts. There was soccer, basketball, painting and massaging two of the audiences. The audiences also started to give them treats, bamboo sticks. They accepted it with proud and gulp them down like nothing. They were also given money, but they grabbed it with their trunks and passed it to their tamers sitting on top of them.

Other places that we ventured to in the zoo were the Chicken Farm (where different types of chickens were present), Monkey Island (where at small bumboat transported us to a small island filled up with species of monkeys) and zoo walkthrough.

Noon marked our end at the A’Famosa Resort and we headed out to Giant for a short shopping trip. The rest was accompanied by sleeping to our way back to our island homeland, Singapore.

I have to say that the trip was really fun and enjoyable and I did not regret coming to this trip at all with my friends and teachers.

This year had been a very exciting and interesting year. It was indeed a year marked with many challenges. Many activities were held this year.

As usual, the highlight of this year for the secondary two cadets was the annually held ATC (adventure training camp) at Pulua Ubin. It was held during the September holidays. Many fun activities were carried out. The activities comprised of kayaking, Ubin familiarisation and low rope elements. One of the activities in the low rope elements includes the rock climbing. I was constantly urged to attempt the next obstacle to reach the top. To conclude, I really had a wonderful time and nevertheless, it was a time whereby we built up our self-confident while having lots of fun.

During the November holidays, the sec 2 cadets attended two courses, the SANA (Singapore anti-narcotic association) course and the CD (civil defence) course. The 2 courses were very meaningful as we gained many useful knowledge and we may even apply it in our daily life. Below are some of the pictures taken during CD course:

Some of the other activities that had been held earlier this year include the Road Marshall Duty, visit to police heritage centre, the visit to Queenstown multi-service centre, service day, the Dry shoot at HTA (Home Team Academy) and our 2 cohesion camps.

Right from the start still the end of the year, everyone in NPCC had lived harmoniously, making NPCC a wonderful CCA and indeed a united team where the squad was well bond, working hard and striving for the best.

A special thanks to all the cadets and all my dearest and marvellous seniors, cadet inspectors (Cyril and Jason), officers and ma’am for all their hard work and efforts. I must say that their effort had pay off in one way or another.
All in all, I am proud to be part of Queensway NPCC unit. Cheers and …all the way!!!

On 1st November 2001, the secondary 2 npcc cadets & Ms Carolyn Leow went to Queensway HQ for our Civil Defence Course. I learnt about 1st aid, fire safety, peace time emergencies, terrorism and war time emergencies. The instructors there taught us what to do during such circumstances like during a fire.

Hands on activities like bandaging your peers' heads and using a fire extinguisher to extinguish a fire were held. Cardo-pulmonary resuscitation or CPR for short, what to do when one is choking, treating burns and scalds, different ways of transporting casualties without the use of stretchers - human crutch, fireman's lift, pick-a-back & cradle methods. to escape a fire, I learnt that one must keep low by crawling on one's hands and knees if one is trapped in a fire.

All these things taught were beneficial, especially when accidents happen. Through this course, I realised how fragile life can be.

On 1 November 2007, we secondary 2 npcc cadets went to attend Civil Defense course. The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) is a uniformed organization under the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs. They are an organization whose main role is to provide fire fighting, rescue and emergency ambulance services; as well as formulate, implement and enforce regulations on fire safety and civil defense shelter matters.

First, we learn about first aids. We learnt how to stop a person from keep bleeding by applying direct pressure. We also learnt how to bandage casualty. Such as bandaging a 90 degree and 45 degree arm bandage and bandage a casualty if he had injured his head. We also learnt how to treat burns and scalds by placing the burnt area under cold running water or immersing it in cold water for at least 10 minutes and gently remove any rings, watches, belts or constricting clothing from the injured area before it starts to swell.

Secondly, we went to another room to learn about Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). First we assess the victim’s condition - shake him gently and ask if he is all right. If he did not reply, call an ambulance. Open his airway by tilting his head back and lifting the chin upwards. If we see foreign objects in his mouth or throat, remove them. Check the casualty whether he is breathing. If he is not breathing, perform mouth-to-mouth ventilation. Feel the pulse of the casualty at the carotid (neck area) for up to 10 seconds. If there is a pulse, perform mouth-to- mouth ventilation at the rate of 12 times per minute, until natural breathing is restored. If not, immediately begin chest compression.

How do we perform chest compression? First, we centre the heel of one hand at the lower half of the breast bone, keeping our fingers off the ribs. Cover his hand with the heel of our other hand. Keep our arms straight and push down vertically about 4 to 5 cm and then release. We have to complete 5 cycles comprising of 30 compressions & 2 full ventilations in each cycle. Between compressions, we do not lift our hands off the chest. Repeat pulse check after the 2 minute and every 5 minutes thereafter. The moment his pulse returns, immediately stop compressions and check for breathing. If victim is not breathing, perform rescue breathing at 12 times per minute (1 breath every 5 seconds) until victim’s natural breathing is restored. If both pulse and breathing have returned, place victim in the recovery position and maintain an open airway.
After learning about CPR, we had our lunch in the canteen. After lunch, we also tried to put out fire by using fire extinguisher.

After that, went back to classroom and had a lesson about emergency exercise. We had a test after the lesson. The course ended after a short briefing. We all enjoy the course.

During the first training, our CI called out five individual names,Daud and YunKeat (Corporals), together with Syahidah, Sakinah and Audrey, all sergeants. We were going to be the next flag bearers in the GOH contingent for 2006 National Day Parade.Having been in some of my school parades and also witnessing the parades myself, I admit that each parade is always the same.

It has always been the same routine over and over again, and thus I was overcome with excitement when I learnt that my role would be different. However, the trainings were so much tougher than what I had expected.Obviously, we were all happy that we were in this together. We even got extra, separated trainings from the rest of the Guard of Honour. But we did not mind at all, we enjoyed the trainings instead.

Our CIs told us to try our best to keep the flag straight.The most important thing we were taught was to just be serious and not to drop the flag.When the actual day came, I saw for myself the humongous crowd witnessing the parade. I was so nervous, but when the band played the song, I just marched in naturally. There were some mistakes, but overall we were satisfied with out performance. That overwhelming sense of achievement was like no other.

The greatest parade I ever experienced- SYF 2006. April was one of its first few trainings. When we arrived at the Home Team Academy, there were cadets from different units falling into their respective contingents. I will never forget this scene, as it inspired me to be involved in every single activity.Next, all the cadets had to squeeze into the drill shed, which was much smaller than our school’s football field. We were then separated into various squads, and CIs were assigned to every contingent. Basic drills were conducted to select cadets who were about to form up as the Guard of Honor.

I was one of the cadets chosen, and I felt honoured.Although I knew that the trainings would be extremely tough, but I was prepared to do my very best.All the cadets from the GOH contingent received a rifle each. I felt a greater sense of responsibility- the rifle, the number one uniform, the dills, and… the honour. We had to do drills with it, and because it was the first time for most of us, the CIs were not pleased with our performance. Under these situations, we were always lost and disappointed with ourselves. However, other squad mates came over and rendered us assistance. This acted as an aiding force for me to carry on.

Trainings after trainings, we endured the intense sunlight and long hours of drills. There were times when I really wanted to give up, but the support and encouragement I received made me strong again.On the actually day, all of us- including the officers, were nervous and afraid that all our efforts put in the trainings might go down the drain if we make any careless mistakes."Do your best, cadets. I'm sure you will be fine."This sentence, which was said by our contingent's CI, boosted our low morale. In the end, we succeeded.

Through these hardships, I gained new friends and experiences. We've done ourselves proud- together as one.

On the 19th-21st of June, our school, together with Nanyang Girls High, St Joseph's Institution, Anglo-Chinese School(Barker), Ghim Moh Secondary School, St Margaret's Secondary School and Hwa Chong Institution had our annual Area15 ATC(Adventure Training Camp) for the Sec2s and Sec3s.As soon as we reached Bahru campsite (sec2s), we were randomly separated into 8 groups T-E-A-M-W-O-R-K, each group with a mixed number of cadets from the various schools. We then had our icebreaker games within our groups and got to know our group-mates better. Immediately after, groups Titans, Eagles, Absolute Ace and Majestic went for kayaking while groups Wonderful Wings, Oreos, Revolution and Knights were doing the tent pitching and campsite familiarization which, by the way, Group Revolution (MY group) completed the fastest and when we were finished, roles were switched.

Camp Familiarization was fun, it was basically running around the Bahru and Noordin Campsites, trying to "save our lives from the evil witch and getting the treasure" (Right...). We had to piece puzzle pieces together to form as maps and get clues to the password. The group, which got the password first, was supposed to get the "treasure" which the CIs made no mention of when Revolution completed the race (Hmmm...). Kayaking was cool too, first time for many. We had our wash-ups, dinner and designed our group flags.Later then, we had our mock campfire. The whole canteen of us singing together at the same time and learning new cheers, plus it was really entertaining listening to our highly respected CIs sing out of tune. Then it was lights off, and sentry duty started for Groups- Titans, Eagles, Absolute Ace and Majestic.Day 2 started with PT (Bleh.), but a must in NPCC camps. After, the rain did not prevent the CI committee etc. from giving us a fun, memorable "ATF". We went through, a dark maze and had to feel our way out of it. It was not just dark, but pitch black, which gave everyone, especially the girls, some time to bond and learn how to work together and trust each other.

After everyone had tried going through the maze, two girls and two boys went through it again, this time, competitively. And we managed to complete it faster than the two boys did, even though Shi Wei Sir was throwing muddy balls at us in the darkness the whole time. (And I got so scared thinking it was the work of "something" else.)We were supposed to rock-climbing but the rain did not just obediently stop after the maze; still, we got to wear a harness and climb down a few steps down from the canteen which was just as cool. Ubin Familiarization was really fun; it was extremely tiring, but at the end of the 2 hour walk, you would really feel like it was a big achievement you managed to walk that distance without cracking. During, we even saw a cute wild boar and our Miss Leow (TO Carolyn) made us practise hornet drill on the muddy trail (So evil...). The mud was really cooling though, I have to admit. The soreness of our leg muscles helped us sleep that night too.

Next, we had our war games where we were separated into four clans- The Shi Clan, Wei Clan, Xiao Clan and Wen Clan. No one really won or lost but everyone was definitely unsparingly wet.Then came the highlight of the camp- the combined campfire (sec2s and sec3s), and it was the highlight of the camp indeed. Cheers and group performances, by both the sec2s and 3s, and not to forget dancing. We also got to sabotage our very own Cyril Sir into performing the romantic classic "I Ask My Love" with Kumar Sir and he left the center stage with a sweet kiss. We ended the campfire with a "Goodnight Campers" and a soft "whoosh" and retired into our own campsites.

After Area Cleaning during Day3, we got to meet up with our beloved Sec3 seniors again for our closing ceremony at Noordin. We then hiked back to Ubin Jetty and took a bumboat ride back to Singapore. ATC was extremely tiring but still we felt so attached to Ubin. When I was finally home on my bed looking at my insect bites and pruney, wrinkly feet (soaked shoes), I could not help but reminisce and wish I were still in Ubin even though itwas a "little" tough.

Our schoolmates would occasionally question us about our decisions in joining NPCC and the reason for not choosing other uniformed groups. Somehow, deep in our hearts, we have the answer. We are compassionate as we dream of being police officers one day. We consider NPCC as a fun, loving and caring 'family'. NPCC organizes a wide range of activities, eg. Campcraft, first aid, field cooking and not forgetting- drills.

Of course, we can apply what we have learnt so far in NPCC to our everyday lives. For example, if we ever get bites and stings, we can use what we have learnt in first aid to carefully treat our injuries. But we also have other purposes going through these activities. We have heard many stories about how our seniors survived the ATC(Adventure Training Camp), thanks to the familiarization of the activities they faced. Hence, we must be prepared for it too. One more activity that was commonly held was the NPCC school camps. These camps taught us to be more co-operative with our squadmates, build up our level of initiative and to strengthen our relationship and trust for one another.

NPCC is a disciplined CCA that encourages us to be initiative, responsible, disciplined and also caring. All in all, we will never regret having to join NPCC in the first place, feeling happy instead. We found new friends and sort of changed ourselves into better beings. Through the seriousness and tough at times, we find it extremely beneficial. Our officers and seniors never hesitate to let us show our potential and to give our best shot. We hope that we will be able to give the best to our very own- NPCC 'family'.
